Break the Silence

Stop Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault

Haywood County Safe Schools Project

A federally-funded collaborative between Haywood County Schools, the Haywood County Sheriff’s office and WNC Alliance tp prevent violence in the K-12 school setting.

The Federal Commission on School Safety identifies character education, positive school climate and school-based mental health access as several of the primary mitigating factors for early identification of needs related to youth at risk for violent behavior (2018).

Haywood County faculty and administration are provided training in Trust Based Relational Intervention (TBRI®) to meet the needs of the “whole student”.

The Basics

The Bureau of Justice Assistance awarded funding to the WNC Alliance in partnership with Haywood Sheriff’s Office and Haywood County Public Schools to prevent violence in the K-12 school setting.

TBRI© (Trust Based Relational Intervention) is considered the “core framework” of this project and is used to train school district employees and law enforcement personnel.

TBRI® is based on years of evidence-based research and uses “empowering principles to address physical needs, connecting principles for attachment needs, and correcting principles to disarm fear-based behaviors” (tcu.edu).

Other training available addresses Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), Mental Health First Aid, PTSD, Suicide & Self Harm.

A 36-month grant was awarded and activities began in spring 2022.

Training includes a combination of local consultations, small group meetings, large group presentations and virtual webinars. Each school sends one faculty/staff member to an out-of state TBRI Practitioner Training hosted by the Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development.

The Federal Commission on School Safety identifies character education, positive school climate and school-based mental health access as several of the primary mitigating factors for early identification of needs related to youth at risk for violent behavior.

A vast majority of educators attending our training events “strongly agreed” that TBRI® tools are relevant to address needs at their schools.
