Human
trafficking is the world's third largest criminal enterprise,
after drugs and weapons. The U.S. government estimates
that yearly some 800,000 people are trafficked across
international borders, and millions are trafficked within
their own countries, to be indentured servants, domestics,
farm laborers, or worse. Human trafficking is a multi-dimensional
threat. Human trafficking victims are deprived of their
freedom and human rights, and suffer substantial mental
and physical abuse, but the impact of human trafficking
goes far beyond individual victims. It is a global health
risk and fuels the growth of organized crime. It undermines
the health, safety and security of all the nations it
touches.
Human trafficking cases have been uncovered and prosecuted
in North Carolina. It could already be happening in
our community.
The goal of this seminar to acquaint law enforcement,
representatives of non-governmental organization service
providers, attorneys, healthcare professionals and the
community in general with many aspects of human trafficking,
including its origins, methods of operation, telltale
indicators, unique victimization process, and the federal
and state laws involved. The hosts and speakers wish
to develop within our community an understanding of
this crime and the resources available to fight it.
You and your organization are welcome and encouraged
to attend.
